Being honest for me… it’s one of the hardest things to be.

I used to be able to express myself properly-sharing my thoughts and not being WORRIED about what the person asking would think of them-or me.

But now, if I’m asked what I think, or even what I’d like this person to do-my mind immediately jumps to what the person asking me will think-and not what I’m actually thinking myself.

More simply put, I have a fear of being ‘selfish’ or asking for something and expressing myself properly.

My mind-due to my suffering of anxiety and various insecurities, likes to remind me of when I was laughed at for speaking about something I liked, or when I suddenly found myself cut out of my circle of friends for no reason whatsoever.

Art and creativity are really important to me-as much as I struggle with them both. Because, for me-being creative is my way of connecting with people, and it’s one of the reasons I can persevere with it. Because being able to share the results with someone-and being able to make something together with someone…

For me it’s special, unique and simply personal on so many levels, that I don’t find myself needing much else from the person I share with. I don’t care about how the creativity looks, the fact someone is showing me something they’ve put effort into is the most flattering of things.

It’s enough to make me so insurmountably happy, that I’ll do whatever I can to give back to this person, be it through more creativity, or supporting their other interests however I can.

But I usually never ask for such things…Because usually, I’m too afraid. For fear of either annoying this person with the same simple things, and causing them to loose interest in having me as a friend, or having my interests used as a way to hurt me.

Both have happened to me in the past, and I wish I was able to let them go…

One memory that stands out to me most, was a time I made something to share in the form of a chalk drawing. It took a while to make, and I was proud of the results. But a group of boys thought it’d be entertaining to tell me they wanted to erase and destroy it-for the simple fact I was getting upset they thought such a thing was funny.

I didn’t want to let them turn my most precious interest, and an expression of it, into something else they could tease me with. But it ended up working…enough so that I became defensive and secretive of my own interests.

For the rest of school, I ended up concealing my enjoyment of art and creativity, due to happenings like that. I lost my confidence and ability to be honest about what I made…as well as the fact it was how I could connect with people. I ended up with a fairly low sense of confidence as a result.

That’s not to say I didn’t find other ways to be friends with people…but I found myself struggling a lot. I tended to support and focus only on the interests of those around me, but I (and they) rarely did the same for my own…

Things inevitably started to feel one sided, and I found myself frustrated because of a nagging sense of neglect that sat in the back of my mind. I didn’t understand why it was there, or why I was feeling such things, when I had people around me who didn’t mind spending time with me. I was more grateful for the fact they were simply being nice to me, rather than the fact they didn’t offer me the support I offered them.

In the end things fell apart…and I ended up blaming myself. My insecurities compounded as a result. And even now, having finally found people who genuinely care about me and support me, I haven’t been able to put those bad times behind me. Though I have been working on it, slowly but surely…

But, I’m afraid of being left behind, of annoying those close to me with similar requests of things that make me happiest and causing them to leave me behind. I still love sharing my ideas and interests, but I need constant reassurance that these people want to hear what I’m saying…that I’m not bothering or asking too much…

I’m simply afraid of being honest-being selfish with them-because they mean so much that I don’t want to loose them. And sometimes I find myself frustrated again, because I’m being so careful I’m starting to neglect my own needs again…because I wasn’t able to bring myself to ask for something I would’ve liked to do with them…or that any attempts I have made have been brushed aside, perhaps inadvertently…

I really, really wish I could be honest…that it was that easy for me…I wish I could pluck these anxieties out of my mind and put them to the wind..

Perhaps I can, someday…though it might be a while yet…I’ve still got a long way to go.

You see this? This painting has caused my poor, dear friend, Sara Dunn, a lot of pain.

It’s a fun image that has gotten a lot of attention, but this attention has been misplaced through outrageously unsourced art.

Now, even the tumblrRadar has chosen to ignore that Sara actually has a tumblr: bluebirdovermyeyes and reposted the image.

It references her deviantart url: decomposerdoll, but makes no effort to link to the image even on there.

If you like her painting, I strongly recommend reblogging it from Sara, the artist, and perhaps looking at some of her other work.
